In Steam, you can send an item from the House Menu while the item is highlighted. Send it to the other player by hitting the C key on your keyboard or the RB button on your controller.
On Xbox One, pressing RB on the controller will give or trade fighters and items in the house menu to the other player in the session.
In both Steam and Xbox One, the player receiving the item is not required to send anything back unless you are both specifically in a TRADE MODE SESSION from the Space Phone.
